The 3 Dogs From South Africa

Africa characterizes as being a striking continent, which is not only due to its tradition and culture but also to its varied flora and fauna. And when talking about African fauna, it is common to think almost immediately of the unique exotic species. They characterize this continent: lions, giraffes, rhinoceroses, elephants, and hippopotamuses. However, the African continent has also been the cradle of the birth of different dog breeds that are unique. And that is why this post is about dogs from South Africa, one of the most relevant countries on this continent.

We have been interested in the different breeds of dogs in the world. If you want to know what are the 10 base groups from which all of them are derived, visit our post:

Rhodesian Ridgeback

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is, so far, the only dog breed originating from South Africa. And is recognized by the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) and the Kennel Union of South Africa. This dog has been called the “lion dog” for many years. We also find many references to the breed by its original English name, Rhodesian ridgeback. This peculiar name refers to these dogs’ characteristic crest of inverted hair along their back.
It is a large dog with an elongated body and well-developed musculature. Rhodesian Ridgeback are extremely loyal but can reserve their attention with strangers. They are also magnificent guardians.

Africanis or African canis is a breed of African dog native to South Africa, where it is also known as Zulu, Bantu, Hottentot, and Khoikhoi. However, the same term “Africanis” can be used, in Southern Africa, as a generic name for any dog native to this region.
Its origins are not well known, but some experts believe that it began to develop naturally from crosses. This was between the primitive dogs of South Africa with hounds introduced from the European continent. Some others believe that the Africanis are the original dogs of Africa.
It is a medium-sized dog with a body longer than tall and well-developed musculature. Its short, thick coat can exhibit any color, and the characteristic Rhodesian crest is also seen in this breed. Africanis are active, fast, and very slender, so they need a high level of physical activity.

Boerboel or African Dogo

The Boerboel is another African dog breed that originated in South Africa. It is a molosser type dog, known internationally as the South African Mastiff or Boerboel. The bullmastiff, the Great Dane, and the bullensbeisser (a dog of German origin, now extinct) are supposed to have been used for its development.
Regarding its character, the Boerboel is an intelligent and balanced dog that usually responds very well to education. However, he is very distrustful in the presence of strangers, as he has been historically trained as a guard and defense dog. Therefore, socialization will be essential in his education.
